SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN HOVE

Barry & Fiona have lived in this '30s house for 16 years. They wanted to update the hallway entrance to create a lighter, more contemporary feel. Once the build had started they could see the potential in remodelling the entire property in a contemporary style. The opportunity to improve the small, north-facing rear garden was also a priority.

All external walls were rendered covering the ugly concrete blocks, composite grey slate style tiles replaced the pantiles. Plastic windows were replaced with powder-coated aluminium.

The old garage was demolished making way for a new glass extension to the kitchen, creating a light, bright social area for all the family to enjoy. The original dark dining room became the utility and storage room. The dining area in the extended kitchen now looks out to an outdoor room complete with built-in seating and unique water feature.

The street side glass panels to the dining area are protected by a sliding louvered screen which doubles up as screening for the rear garden.

A combination of block wall supporting steel frame with inset timber panels completes the new boundary fencing.

MODERN DRIVE

Situated in Worthing, West Sussex, Howard and Elizabeth had a problem with the long driveway to their beautiful Georgian home. The garage was built at the top of the drive so they could not get their cars anywhere near the house.

My solution was to demolish the garage and replace it with automated gates at the road end of the drive. The 40 metre drive was excavated and then relayed with bonded resin and aggregate. Two storage buildings were constructed with a flat canopy roof spanning both structures creating cover for two vehicles. The beds either side of the drive were planted with fast growing bamboo to give instant screening from neighbouring properties.

LEWES ON TARGET

Nick and Emma recently bought their 1964 house in Lewes specifically to remodel the entire property to meet their requirements. They wanted to reconfigure the ground floor to create one large living area incorporating the kitchen, dining and seating. Planning consent has now been given to replace all of the windows with aluminium framed units, conversion of garage into a family room, change of roof and exterior finish.

The 3D drawings I provided were used as reference for a pre-planning application meeting with the planning officer. It was established at this point that although there were significant changes proposed, planning was likely to be given. This project is still in progress and is estimated to complete by the beginning of September 2009.

The pictures below show the sitting room when purchased and work in progress.

A NEW CONCEPT

This client wanted a contemporary design for a freestanding building that could be constructed on a chassis with wheels - technically, a caravan. SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels) were used for the construction, both for their incredible insulation properties and for speed-of-build. Large, aluminium sliding glazed doors give the building a light, bright feeling. A Ventaxia heat-exchange system was installed to minimise the energy required to heat the structure. This unit is ideal for additional accommodation because planning rules are less stringent than for permanent structures.

NEW SHOP FOR VINTAGE GOWNS

Elizabeth decided to build on the success of her internet-based vintage clothes business by opening a shop in Worthing. The brief was to create a space which had impact but was modern and uncluttered. The walls were lined and painted a deep aubergine and two massive black and white photographs covered the back walls giving a sense of retro period. The room on the first floor which houses the more expensive gowns was painted in aubergine and full-length velvet curtains create the changing areas.
